Ajax Downs Selections June 18

It's Sunday which means it's race day at Ajax Downs and do we ever have a stacked card today. 10 races on tap today, with two trials to the John Deere Juvenile Challenge, the first legs of the QROOI Sprint and Distance series races going 110 and 350 yards respectively, the AQHA Challenge Maiden final and the $58,000 Picov Maturity featuring a terrific group of older horses. There are sure to be many exciting races today, definitely worth tuning in for. Here are my selections for today's card.

Race 1: 5-4-1
Welcome to Ajax Downs! #5 PASSUM LANE wrapped up 2016 with a very good second in a Speed Index race. He was in the top three in seven of 10 starts last year and should fit with this group. #4 IAMASWEETMAN was beaten a head by Jimmy Boyz Cartel on May 14, a solid seasonal bow. Although only one for 30 in his career he is capable of grabbing cheques. #1 GRABIN AWARDS faced good fields in his final two starts of 2016, both third place finishes. He has worked well preparing for this season. The Daily Double starts here.

Race 2: 4-5-6
This is the first trial to the John Deere Regional Juvenile Challenge. #4 LETHAL PYC is a son of Pyc Paint Your Wagon out of Lethal Pyc, a restricted Grade 1 winner and multiple open Grade 1 placed earner of over $450,000 US. He has improved in his workouts. #5 DIANE DYNAMITE raced well on debut at Indiana. She is a sister to several decent horses including Grade 3 placed Aberdonian. #6 CARENEROS leads the field in experience, racing three times already at Remington, showing some promise before being claimed for $25,000. The experience edge may make him the one to beat.

Race 3: 4-2-5
This is the second trial to the John Deere Regional Juvenile Challenge. #4 ZOOMN BLUE is a full brother to the ultra consistent Eyesa Zoomn. He has had a few gate works preparing for his debut. #2 ISLAND VODKA was beaten less than a length in her debut at Remington where she was bumped at the start. She could be tough with a clean start. #5 SILKY SENATOR has made two starts at Remington, both good third place efforts. She broke very well in her most recent start and is another who looks very threatening today. Pick 3 wagering is offered here.

Race 4: 1-6-4
This race kicks off the $.20 Pick 4! #1 WINNER ON A LARK caught a tough field and got a rough trip in her seasonal debut three weeks back. She gets in easier here and tends to race well from the rail. #6 NO CERVEZA FOR YOU dropped into a Speed Index race and beat a field that included Cole Miner. She runs far more good races than bad and had a three win streak last year. #4 IM PRETTY FAMES has raced in two starter allowance races this year and run a second and a decent fourth. Despite not winning a race last year she is a trier and is a win candidate here.

Race 5: 3-7-10
This race is a QROOI Sprint Series race going 110 yards. #3 BEACH BUM EDDIE is multiple stakes placed in Indiana. He is a very sharp breaker with a lot of class so the opportunity to try 110 yards makes perfect sense for him. #7 ONE KOOL WAVE has four wins in six tries at 110 yards. His lifetime record of 21 wins in 35 starts speaks for itself: he's really talented. We'll see how he does in his 9 year old debut. #10 CARTELS FAST MONEY won a QROOI Overnight series race for mares last month. She is a great breaker who has done well at 110 yards and will hopefully break well from the outside.

Race 6: 6-8-7
This race is a QROOI Distance Series race going 350 yards. #6 HICKERSON was the runner up in the Alex Picov Memorial Futurity last year. He is a large, leggy horse who will appreciate longer distances from 350 and up. #8 ALAKAZAAM lost all hope at the start when trying to qualify to the Picov Maturity. He had an impressive win streak last year that included the Ontario Sires Stakes Derby. If he gets out well he should be tough. #7 ANGELLES BABY TNT overcame a slow start to be third in the QROOI Overnight race for mares last month. She has done well against respectable foes in Alberta earlier in her career. Pick 3 wagering is offered here.

Race 7: 4-6-1
This race is the $29,667 AQHA Challenge Maiden! It also starts the $.20 Late Pick 4. #4 FEARLESSLEE raced against some very classy horses as a juvenile in the U.S. In his Ajax debut he hopped at the start and cost himself some early ground. Hopefully he breaks more alertly. #6 MARYLAND MAGIC had run several good races down south last year and this spring, then scored a rather easy win in the trials for this race. He has a very real chance to double up here. #1 ONE DASHIN ROSE was an easy winner in her trial and set the fastest qualifying time. She has put in good efforts along the rail in previous races down south.

Race 8: 3-4-8
#3 SNOW STORMING made her 2017 debut in a Speed Index race where she was fourth behind No Cerveza For You and Cole Miner. She gets back into her condition now and could be better second off the layoff. #4 MISS DOCK HILL broke well and broke her maiden in her Ajax debut on June 4. She had put in a few very good runs in the U.S. before coming here. #8 EC FIRE FLY broke her maiden in her Ajax debut over another American import named Fast Streakin Nick. She may continue to move forward.

Race 9: 8-1-7
Today's feature race is the $58,000 Picov Maturity! #8 ONE FAMOUS GLASS dug in with conviction to win his trial, his 15th career win. He wrapped up 2016 with a win in the Alex Picov Memorial Championship and must always be respected. #1 COUNTRY BOY 123 won his trial with complete authority, albeit in a race where his most dangerous competition, Alakazaam, was finished at the start. He was very game at Los Alamitos for the Adequen Derby Challenge Championship last fall and was deserving of the QROOI 2016 Horse of the Year honour he received. #7 FAST MAN VIC had a terrific run at Hialeah before coming to Ajax last year. His Ajax season didn't quite pan out as well as I thought it would, although he did score two wins here. He was very game in defeat behind One Famous Glass in the trials, and if he can find that old Hialeah form he could pull an upset here. The Late Double begins here.

Race 10: 7-3-2
#7 UAINTSEENNOTHINGYET showed nothing on debut, but wasn't too bad in his second start, finishing fourth of five behind Winner On a Lark and Hammer Tyme after a troubled trip. With a clean run down the outside he may be able to upset. #3 NORSE BAY finished fourth behind Ghost Pines and Flirt With the Boyz on opening day, then second behind repeat winner Perfect to Look At on May 21. In her most recent start she was sandwiched at the start and finished last. She is probably the one to beat. #2 STREAKIN JET SPEED has been no better than fifth in her five starts, but has had trouble in a few and has caught tough foes in others. This is the softest looking race she has been in.

Good luck and thank you to everyone joining us today!
