Ajax Downs Selections Thanksgiving Monday

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Ajax Downs! We have a fantastic card for the holiday, topped by the Alex Picov Memorial Championship for older horses going the classic 440 yards and the Alex Picov Memorial Futurity for the two year olds going 400 yards. The weather hasn't been perfect and the track will be muddy, but there should be some great races throughout the day. Here are my selections.

Race 1: 5-6-2
Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Ajax Downs! #5 JESS TUFF has hit the board in two of his five starts and qualified to the OSS Futurity. He drops back from open to Ontario Sired company today. #6 I THINK ICON finished second by a head in her second start in an un-noteworthy group then came back with an okay fourth place finish. If she breaks well she can be in the mix. #2 BELLDACIOUS debuted two weeks ago and was a little worked up in the paddock. She had the rail post that day and didn't run too bad. We may see some improvement. The Daily Double starts here.

Race 2: 1-3-5
This race starts the early Pick 3. #1 TELLER LAJOLLA has shown some run in each of her three starts in better fields than this. If she gets out well she looks like a big threat in this group. #3 MISS COOKIES showed some run in her first two starts in Arizona but quickly fell off form. Unfortunately in her Ajax debut she broke poorly and showed no real signs of improvement. There may be a big turn around in store if she can just get a clean run. #5 WINNERS PROSPECT is still a maiden after 25 starts but has run some okay races and takes the drop in for $5,000 today. He could get a piece of it in this short field.

Race 3: 1-2-4
#1 IM SPEEDY was beaten a nose by Eyesa Speedy Simon two back. Last time out he finished very gamely between horses to be third behind Ice Fishn & Home to Vegas in a QROOI Overnight Series race. It's very tough to knock that form. #2 ONE DASHIN ROSE exits a NW2 win over next-out winner A Splash of Royalty. Although a NW3 would be more ideal, she doesn't look totally outclassed here and is worth some consideration. #4 FASTER THAN U exits a good fourth place finish in a tough optional claimer topped by Itsallaboutramblin and Valiant Stoli Time. This group may be a bit easier and he is a capable horse when he's at his best.

Race 4: 2-3-4
This race is the 110 yard Gridiron Gallop, as well as the start of the $.20 Pick 4! #2 ONE KOOL WAVE was beaten a neck in his first start of the year at this distance in the first leg of the QROOI Sprint Series, then came back to win the final two legs. There is no denying that he is a monster and he's got a solid record at 110 yards to back it up. #3 CARTELS FAST MONEY is a mare with a big kick from the gate and has run several good races because of it. Her 110 yard record is solid, and earlier this year she was right there with the two ML favourites at the distance. Don't count her out. #4 ARCTIC FAME kicked off the year with four wins including the QROOI Sprint Series 110 yard race, but hasn't had the kick to beat One Kool Wave in the last two. He's a sharp gelding who seems to have gotten a bit better with age.

Race 5: 6-4-5
#6 PASSUM LANE has unfortunately had two consecutive gate malfunctions occur in his most recent races, leaving him declared a non starter both times. He can be a handy horse at these lower Speed Index levels and it wouldn't surprise me if he's sharp at a good price. #4 TETE DE JAUNE dropped into this Speed Index class two starts back and has won both of his attempts, albeit narrowly. He's found his level and he should continue to be competitive. #5 SAMMIES ROCKET has been right there behind Tete De Jaune in those two most recent starts. He's similar to Passum Lane in that he's a bit win shy but puts in plenty of respectable efforts.

Race 6: 4-5-7
#4 FAMOUS MISCHIEF had a soft field for his Ajax debut and ran an okay second. He's lightly raced and while I don't think this group is as easy, I still don't see any world beaters for his second start over the surface. #5 TRES SEIS DELIGHT showed some promise as a two year old in Indiana but hasn't panned out this year. Most recently at Belterra he broke out, bumped a foe and was a non-threat. We'll see how he fits here. #7 CAPTAIN CAROLINA followed good form to a win on September 11 but was disqualified for interference. He's been in pretty solid form and has already proven he can beat other maidens.

Race 7: 7-6-5
The first of today's Stakes features is the $86,800 Alex Picov Memorial Championship! #7 FIESTY ICON scored back to back optional claiming wins then finished fourth in the All Canadian Classic after a bit of a stumble at the start. His one try at 440 last year was a big effort. If things go his way today he could pull off the upset. #6 ONE FAMOUS GLASS looks to defend his title in this race. He loves 440 yards, with five wins in nine starts. Two starts back he managed to beat Country Boy 123 at the distance. He's a serious horse. #5 COUNTRY BOY 123, the likely heavy favourite, has had a tremendous season, four wins including two Stakes and a QROOI Distance series race, with one close second behind One Famous Glass. His wins have been dominant and against the best horses around. Selling this horse short would just be wrong. As I always do, I'm trying to beat him at a short price, but he is a fantastic racehorse who deserves plenty of recognition for his accomplishments.

Race 8: 2-6-5
#2 SPEEDOCRACY had a good three year old season but has had some troubles at the break this year and it has caused him to be winless. However, last time he got out fine and was just beaten a nose by Sugarman's Delight. I think this is an easier spot, hopefully he leaves fast. #6 PERFECT TO LOOK AT was beaten a nose last out in a 90 and under Speed Index race by Ms Dashin Corona, who has since won again. His record is very solid, in 10 starts he has never been worse than fourth and the 90 Speed Index races are usually quite solid events. #5 EYESA WILD BOY scored his NW3 two back then came back to run a good fifth in a tough optional claiming race. He gets in a bit easier now and can grab a piece of it. The late Pick 3 starts here.

Race 9: 5-8-2
Today's second Stakes feature is the $112,850 Alex Picov Memorial Futurity! #5 EXPRESS YOUR DESIRE was an impressive debut winner, went on the shelf, returned for new connections and won his trial despite lugging inwards a bit. He seems like a runner to me. #8 HAD TO BE IVORY, undefeated in four starts, really made a big statement when he won his trial easily with a 101 speed index, a number not seen by many two year olds here at Ajax. He already has a Stakes win to his name and is the one to beat here. #2 ISLAND VODKA qualified to the John Deere Juvenile Challenge earlier this year but was not a threat in the final. She returned with an easy maiden with then scored a win in the trials for today's event. She seems like she's moving in the right direction. The Late Double starts here.

Race 10: 3-8-1
#3 MRS FIRST LADY won the AQHA Challenge Maiden earlier in the season. Two back she was beaten a head by Miromar and Ls Prince in the Adequan Derby Challenge trials before finishing fifth in the final. She takes a big class drop today and should be tough. #8 GRABIN AWARDS is only one for 19 in his career but is in pretty good form and has been picking up the minor shares. If he's a good price I would take a look at him. #1 FURR SHEAR was beaten a neck by A Splash of Royalty last time out after being beaten a head when racing out of condition against NW3. He is lightly raced and still has time to improve.

Good luck and thank you to everyone joining us today!

Ajax Downs Selections August 20

After last week's stakes doubleheader we return with a seven race card at Ajax Downs. No stakes, trials or overnight events this week but we do have a nice optional claiming race for older horses going in Race 6. Here are my selections.

Race 1: 1-4-5
Welcome to Ajax Downs! #1 A GAME DASHER has been in the top three in all four of her starts this year, including a win three back. Last time out she was a good third behind The Flash Drive and Fishn For a Corona. If she gets the jump on them she may be hard to catch. #4 HOME ICE raced very well when finishing fourth in the OSS Derby two back. He then won a NW2, defeating Check the Winner, who returned to beat a field of NW3 and returns in this spot, still eligible for the condition. He outfinished A Game Dasher in their seasonal bow in May. #5 KOOL DASHIN BABE broke her maiden in a QROOI Overnight series race and came right back to win a NW2 over her stablemate, A Splash of Royalty, who also returns here. She draws outside and has a realistic shot at the hat trick. The Daily Double starts here.

Race 2: 5-7-4
This race begins the early Pick 3. #5 WONT BAC DOWN finished fourth on debut, finishing behind Miss Racy Eagle. She has a decent pedigree, half sister to Countrys Comin Bac, and could improve second time out.  #7 MISS RACY EAGLE has faced a couple of the top two year olds to start here in her three local starts, Had to be Ivory and Carneros. She leads the field in experience, has shown some run and I don't think there are any monster first timers here. #4 FURY US debuts with a pair of gate works on her form. She has been paddock schooled in the mornings so she has some familiarity with the routine. Her dam was a two year old winner.

Race 3: 1-4-3
#1 JESS RIP stumbled a bit at the start but was still out fast and led the whole way when breaking her maiden last time out. You may want to note that she was reported to have bled in that start and will race on Lasix today. If she gets out well she has a good shot to double up. #4 GRABIN COURAGE had the outside post in a short field, broke outwards and finished fourth of five. He faces Ontario breds here as opposed to open company and will hopefully break straight. #3 ARISING MIRACLE finished fifth in the OSS Derby two back. Last out she was fourth at this level behind Ice N Snow and Mr Polar Express. I don't think that was a bad group of NW2 to be fourth in. He could be alright here.

Race 4: 3-2-1
This race kicks off the $.20 Pick 4! #3 SHESASTREAKINCHICK is not exactly a winning type; two for 42 in her career with the most recent win back in June 2015. She was second at this level two back, but last time out was in a really tough group of NW3. If she breaks well she should be competitive here. #2 RICH AND ON FIRE exits a pair of wins at the 75 and under level and takes a slight jump up to 80 and under. He's in good form and this really isn't much of a jump in class. #1 PASSUM LANE won three back and has kept good form in the two runs since. Although nine for 20 in the top three in his career, his record is a bit better than it looks if you dig into it a bit. He's a respectable horse in these Speed Index races.

Race 5: 4-2-1
#4 COLD HARD DASH wasn't in easy for his first Ajax start, finishing fifth in a race topped by Zoxtobeyou and Home Ice. His second local start was a very tough optional claimer that was won by Reckless an Wild and included The Fdd Map and Memories Times Six. He has some experience over the surface, races without Lasix and gets back into his condition. #2 HELLO STOLI broke his maiden over his stablemate, Kool Dashin Babe who has won two races since and is entered in today's first. He came back to be third behind Ms First Prize Pearl and Maryland Magic, probably the toughest NW2 we've have this year, then went out of his condition to face NW3, finishing fourth behind Ms First Pirze Pearl again. He should be competitive. #1 ONE DASHIN ROSE had three very nice efforts to start the season off, including a close third in the AQHA Challenge Maiden, but stumbled at the start in the Adequan Derby Challenge trials and finished sixth. If she gets out well this time she should fit right in with this group. The late Pick 3 begins here.

Race 6: 8-3-6
The Late Double starts here. #8 FASTER THAN U was beaten by Country Boy 123, Alakazaam, Runaway Cause and Fast Man Vic last time out. That was just his second start of the season, and I think he may have needed those first two. He's a bit of a reach in this field, but he's got some run and I think he has the potential to improve today. #3 HOME TO VEGAS ran his career best speed figure and speed index last time out, finishing fourth at this level. He makes his third start of the year here and I don't think he's lost a step from two to three years old. #6 COUNTRYS COMIN BAC has been right there in the three starts where he's broke well this year. He's a very honest horse, eight top two finishes in 12 starts including a second behind Country Boy 123 in last year's Picov Derby. He always deserves respect.

Race 7: 6-4-10
#6 FAST STREAKIN NICK stumbled at the start last time out but before that had four very good runs, three seconds and a third against good foes. If he breaks he should be right there. #4 WAGER ON ME has been no worse than third in five tries this season and most of those fields have been good ones. I hate to sound like a broken record, but if she breaks well she should be a factor. #10 PYC TRICKIE LADY finished second behind Gogo Jangles in her first start of the season, beating Fast Streakin Nick. She could improve second time out and may be the one to beat from the outside.

Good luck and thank you to everyone joining us today!

Ajax Downs Selections August 13

Stakes doubleheader this weekend at Ajax Downs. Eight races on card, with the late double consisting of the Adequan Derby Challenge and the Ontario Sires Stakes Futurity. After a string of rainy days the weather looks beautiful. Here are my selections.

Race 1: 5-2-1
Welcome to Ajax Downs! #5 NIGHT FISHN ran a troubled seventh in her debut. Second time out she drew the rail in a short field, stumbled at the break and ran a decent second behind a class dropping Mr Polar Express. She draws outside in a short field this time and hopefully will leave better. #2 STREAKIN JET SPEED was underwhelming last year but seems to be a better horse this season. Last time out she was a good fourth in a decent group of horses, running a career high speed figure. One to consider. #1 ADABOI KINGSLEY finished third behind Night Fishn last time out. He was not showing much at the start of the year but may be rounding into form now. The Daily Double starts here.

Race 2: 3-1-5
This race begins the early Pick 3. #3 ZOOMN BLUE has run a little bit greenly in both of his outs but that should be fixed with experience. Both of his runs so far have been respectable. #1 ISLAND VODKA showed a bit of run in her debut in Oklahoma but was troubled in her trial for the John Deere Juvenile Challenge and was not far behind Zoomn Blue in the final. Her presence should be felt if she breaks well. #5 PEEPL R KRAZI bore out a bit at the start in her debut and failed to threaten. She should be able to grab a check in this short field.

Race 3: 6-5-2
#6 ROCKIN MISS KITTY was a Speed Index race winner two back before jumping up into starter allowance company where she ran a good second to Channelislandsflyer. She's a very game mare and it shows with her 12-5-3-0 record at Ajax. #5 FAVORITE LEADER was fourth behind Rockin Miss Kitty last time and last of five in a good group of optional claimers before that. She has not had much luck at all this year but when she breaks she's better than her recent record shows. #2 FLY FAST FOR KAYLEE was fourth of five last time behind Winner On a Lark, who returns here. He's a solid old horse who picks up a lot of checks along the way.

Race 4: 3-4-2
This race kicks off the $.20 Pick 4! #3 ICONIC SHIFT has been a close second in both of his last two races, and both would have been wins if he had broken straight. He's a fast horse and if he gets out on top he'll be tough to run down. #4 THISDUDESONFIRE finished fourth in his Ajax debut behind a very well meant first time starter named One Kool Korona. He makes his second run of the year and second over the local surface which could point to improvement. #2 PEVES OUT FURR CANDY has broken slowly in his two local starts. He has some runs in the States that don't look too bad. We'll see how he breaks today.

Race 5: 6-3-2
#6 YOURNOTTHEBOSSOFME was a very impressive debut winner. Second time out he ducked in sharply early in the race after a right handed hit and cost himself any chance of winning, finishing third before being disqualified. I'm hoping for a clean break and a straight run this time out. #3 ICE N SNOW has two close seconds and a third in three starts this year. Last time when finishing second he was ahead of Yournotthebossofme and was just a nose bob away from winning. #2 GRABIN AWARDS raced against non-restricted NW2 last time out and finished a good fourth behind Gogo Jangles, a horse who was coming off a win and is currently entered in Derby trials at Indiana Grand. He may find this spot easier.

Race 6: 2-7-1
#2 SUGARMANS DELIGHT finished a close third (DQd to seventh) behind the red-hot Deal a Fortune and Valiant Stoli Time last out. Although winless at 400 yards, his three starts at the distance have all been great efforts and he has a lot of class to him. #7 IFWISHESWEREFISHES exits a narrow win over Situation Critical. She is two-for-two at 400 yards and has hit the board in eight of her 13 starts so far. She's tough to ignore. #1 MIROMAR won his first two local starts, including a neck-victory over Ifwisheswerefishes on May 28. He finished second behind his stablemate Ls Prince in the Adequan Derby Challenge trials but was DQd for interference and will not be able to compete in the final. He does seem to like running here. The late Pick 3 starts here.

Race 7: 4-9-5
Our first Stakes feature today is the $30,420 US Adequan Derby Challenge! #4 PEVES FREDDY B didn't break on top but closed well to be second behind Maryland Magic in the trials. That was his first local start so seeing improvement wouldn't be a shock. #9 MARYLAND MAGIC has been no worse than second in four local starts. He finished a good second behind Mrs First Lady in the AQHA Challenge Maiden. Most recently he won his trial for this race and I would think he will be the favourite today. #5 DENALI TELLER OFF, last year's Alex Picov Memorial Futurity winner won her 2017 debut before finishing third in this race's trials. She has never been worse than third. The Late Double begins here

Race 8: 1-4-9
Our second Stakes feature is the $72,550 Ontario Sires Stakes Futurity! #1 ROYAL HATRICK is a half sister to Now Is Forever and Embrace Extravagence, two very nice fillies. In her trial she was beaten a head. I'm not in love with the rail but I love her breeding and she may go overlooked in favour of the trial winners. #4 JUNOIMZOOMIN won her trial quite easily with the fastest qualifying time. This field could very well give her a run for her money but for all we know she'll just get better. #9 HANOVER HILL SUGAR won her trial over Royal Hatrick by a head. She draws outside and would be a good addition to resume of new stallion Make Out Artist.

Good luck and thank you to everyone joining us today!

Ajax Downs Selections August 6

Seven races on tap this week at Ajax Downs. No true featured events but we do have a 110 yard dash in Race 5 and a very nice optional claimer featuring horses like Fiesty Icon and Home to Vegas in Race 6. Here are my selections for today's card.

Race 1: 4-3-1
Welcome to Ajax Downs! #4 HELLFIRE N BRIMSTONE made his 2017 debut 17 days ago and ran a good second despite not breaking perfect. He is liable to improve. #3 MISS HER MADLY exits back to back third place finishes, first in a speed index race against foes with wins to their name, and then in the same race Hellfire N Brimstone exits. She seems to be gradually improving. #1 GEORGIES MAY KITTY has racked up four top three finishes in nine career starts. Her lone start at 350 yards was a decent second and the Thoroughbred breeding she has suggests she'll want distance. The Daily Double starts here.

Race 2: 5-1-2
This race begins the early Pick 3. #5 PASSUM LANE got a bit ancy in the gate last time out and ended up running a decent fourth. He draws outside and may be better if he can stay more settled. #1 RICH AND ON FIRE was outgunned by Passum Lane two back but turned the tables on July 23 and scored the win along the rail. He seems right at home at this low speed index level. #2 SCOUTING FOR ME is a maiden facing winners. He exits three consecutive runner up finishes. Last time out I thought he had a large lead crossing the gap and shouldn't have gotten run down but did. His speed figures are good but it's tough to take a short price on a maiden in this situation.

Race 3: 6-2-1
#6 MISS DOCK HILL didn't break as fast as she should have last time out and was a non factor but was in good form before that. She has been given some time off and may be back to normal here. #2 STEEL PATRIOT has been a fringe player since coming here but is gradually improving. Last time out from the rail he finished fourth behind Ms First Prize Pearl, Maryland Magic and Hello Stoli, a respectable ground. Before that he was beaten a length in a NW2. #1 KOOL DASHIN BABE found her best stride at the right time, winning the QROOI Overnight Series for maidens on July 16 over Iconic Shift. She takes the next jump in conditions.

Race 4: 4-5-2
This race kicks off the $.20 Pick 4! #4 MS FIRST PRIZE PEARL broke sharply to the outside in her first local start but came out much better and won second time out, beating Maryland Magic, who came back to win an Adequan Derby Challenge trial. She may have won the first local start with a better start. #5 FISHN FOR A CORONA won her first two starts, both in NW2 races before getting beat a head by The Flash Drive. She beat Ms First Prize Pearl on July 1. #2 FAST BUCK qualified to the Picov Maturity and was no threat in the final. and hasn't been much of a factor in two allowance races since. He is capable of being competitive and could certainly round things out in this short field.

Race 5: 2-1-7
This race is the 110 yard Gridiron Gallop! #2 ROUGE RIVER CARTEL is new to the 110 yard dash. He has quite a bit of speed leaving the gate and is in very good form this year. #1 ALBERTT is also new to 110 yards. Although he's normally a fine breaker, his start in the OSS Maturity wasn't as quick as it could have been in my opinion, but he could rebound here. #7 DEAL A FORTUNE exits back to back wins in the optional claiming ranks. Last year in one of his attempts at 110 yards he finished second behind Arctic Fame. I wouldn't be surprised to see him as the favourite here. The late Pick 3 begins here.

Race 6: 3-5-1
The Late Double starts here. #3 FIESTY ICON didn't break great and could not recover in the OSS Maturity trials, which is unfortunate as he would have been the favourite in the final. He's capable of running with the best of the best in Ontario, if he breaks he's the one to beat. #5 HOME TO VEGAS made his seasonal debut in the OSS Derby, finishing a neck behind Ghost Pines and Later Tater. He may be sharper now that he's got a race into him. #1 VALIANT STOLI TIME has had a pair of close finishes in similar optional claiming races, beaten a neck by Deal a Fortune in both of them. At the start of the season he had a second behind Albertt and was a length behind One Famous Glass in the Picov Maturity trials. One to consider.

Race 7: 7-6-8
#7 UPPER CANADA broke inwards, bumped a foe and made a late bid but was second best behind Rockin Miss Kitty last time. He is only two for 17 in his career but at a good price I think he's worth considering. #6 ITSALLABOUTRAMBLIN ran a huge third two back, trying to get by at every point but being herded out all the way. Last time out he was third in spite of a less than perfect start, but I don't think it was the same effort. Regardless, he's pretty consistent, eight top three finishes in 12 starts and will likely be favoured. #8 EYE SAID IM NED was fourth behind Rockin Miss Kitty and Upper Canada last time out. He broke outwards then ran a bit greenly early and didn't finish up too badly. He's a longshot to take a look at.

Good luck and thank you to everyone joining us today!

Ajax Downs Selections July 30

We finish the month at Ajax with a big card. Two trials for the Adequan Derby Challenge, a qualifying race for the Adequan Derby Challenge Championship at Prairie Meadows in October, and the second legs of the QROOI Sprint Series and Distance Series. Superstar Country Boy 123 starts from post #1 in the Distance Series race, which goes as Race 8. Here are my selections for today's card.

Race 1: 5-3-4
Welcome to Ajax Downs! #5 FAMES WINNER has shown nothing in three starts this year, all at much higher class levels where he was clearly outmatched. Last year when going through his allowance conditions he had a great season and this is a very sensible drop in class. #3 PURRFECT STORM was beaten a length 10 days ago in a Speed Index race topped by Rockin Miss Kitty. He was beaten a half length for second and should be competitive in this group. #4 IAMASWEETMAN broke inwards and bumped a foe in a NW2 allowance race last time out, finishing seventh of eight. That was a good bunch for that class level. He is a very win shy type but can grab a piece of it. The Daily Double starts here.

Race 2: 5-8-6
This race kicks off the early Pick 3. #5 CARNEROS was beaten a neck in the John Deere Juvenile Challenge. A rider error may have cost him the win, as Rene Gutierrez stopped riding in the late yards, but I think he was caught just as he stopped and would have just ended up second by a head instead of a neck. Regardless, he can leave the gates very well and gets a drop in class here. #8 FAST PRIZE GAL was a well beaten third in her debut. She had the rail post that day but was not loaded early as per usual. Today she draws outside and may improve with experience. #6 PEEPL R KRAZI is a daughter of Ivory James. She has shown improvement in her workouts this year.

Race 3: 2-5-6
#2 HOME ICE lugged inwards early and ended up finishing a good fourth in the OSS Derby last time out. As a two year old he was second in the OSS Futurity and fifth in the Alex Picov Memorial Futurity. If he gets away well he will be the one to beat. #5 KINDA LIKEA LOVESONG was a good third behind Rockin Miss Kitty and Upper Canada last time out in a Speed Index race. Although Rockin Miss Kitty is a respectable foe and this mare has been running well. she's a bit of a chronic losing type, with a one for 16 record in her career. #6 CHECK THE WINNER has been catching solid groups and has not been breaking well this year. Each one of his starts this year shows trouble at the start. With a clean break from the outside he could be competitive.

Race 4: 3-6-1
This race is the start of the $.20 Early Pick 4! #3 ROCKIN MISS KITTY took a couple starts to get going but managed to win last time out. She had a similar cycle last year, two starts that were okay but then a wake up in the third out that led to a very solid season. I think she can be competitive with this group. #6 LOOKIN TO BE ICONIC was third behind First Element last time out, losing place in the final jumps to Channelislandsflyer. Two back she was second behind Arctic Fame, beating Channelislandsflyer. A win candidate. #1 CHANNELISLANDSFLYER has been second or third in each of his five starts this year. It's pretty tough not to like him, he runs hard and grabs plenty of cheques along the way,

Race 5: 4-5-7
This is the first of two trials for the Adequan Ajax Downs Derby Challenge. #4 HICKERSON was put in a very tough spot, the first QROOI Distance Series race for his first start of the year and finished sixth. He's a big, leggy horse who I think definitely appreciates 400 yards as he showed last year, and should improve as he grows into himself. #5 DENALI TELLER OFF bested Hickerson in the Alex Picov Memorial Futurity last year. She won her 2017 debut in an optional claimer over Countrys Comin Bac and Speedocracy, a solid group. She should be favoured. #7 MRS FIRST LADY was an upset winner in the AQHA Challenge Maiden two back. Last time out she broke out and took a good bump, raced on the inside and was a fairly game fourth. She seems to like it here.

Race 6: 6-3-2
This is the second trial for the Adequan Ajax Downs Derby Challenge. #6 PEVES FREDDY B has two runs in Oklahoma this year, most recently winning at today's distance in a $20,000 claiming race. He was Stakes placed last year and the owner has brought him up here for these trials. #3 KONA CORONA has a win and a close second in two starts this year. He seems like he has potential to be a classy type and is one to consider. #2 MARYLAND MAGIC won his trial before finishing second in the AQHA Challenge Maiden. He then finished second behind Ms First Prize Pearl, a runner who I think has a lot of potential to do well here. He has two runs at 400 yards and they were both solid efforts down south. The late Pick 3 begins here.

Race 7: 6-9-10
This race is part of the QROOI Sprint Series going 220 yards. #6 EYESA ZOOMN was fourth by half a length in the first leg of this series at 110 yards. Last year is the 220 leg he was beaten a head by First Down the Track, who had a monstrous season. He goes for his second off the layoff and may be a bit overlooked. #9 ARCTIC FAME has turned into a killer this year, winning each of his four starts so far this season. He won the 110 yard dash two back then came right back a week later for a starter allowance score. We'll see if he can make it five straight. #10 ONE KOOL WAVE was second by a neck going 110 yards behind Arctic Fame in his first start of the year. He is a nine year old veteran who still runs very well in spite of his age The $.20 Late Pick 4 kicks off here!

Race 8: 4-1-6
This race is part of the QROOI Distance Series going 400 yards. #4 FAST MAN VIC is my flyer to try and beat Country Boy 123 because I don't want to take the 1-5 he'll probably be. I know this horse is probably best at 400-440 yards and I think he's better this season than last after having the winter off. If he breaks perfect he may get lucky. #1 COUNTRY BOY 123 is the obvious horse to beat. He broke the 300 yard track record in the Picov Maturity, he's the co-track record holder at 400 yards, and he's just been playing with his competition here. You don't need me to tell you he's the most likely winner. #6 SHOOTIN SIXES has been a good distance horse in Wyoming, Idaho and Nevada in recent years. He made his first local start ten days ago, cutting back to 350 yards and running a pretty good fourth despite hopping at the start. This spot is obviously very tough but this is a horse to watch for when he finds an easier race at 440.

Race 9: 4-2-7
#4 BY ROYAL APPOINTMENT has raced three times and is yet to beat a horse. He added blinkers last time out which I think should help, but that was the OSS Derby and he drew the rail. Today he gets a reasonable group of maidens and may run better. #2 EYESA DEXTER was third (placed second) behind the very impressive Yournotthebossofme two starts back but was a disappointment last time out, finishing fourth of five as the 4-5 favourite. He should be able to get a share here. #7 ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOMIN BY had two decent second place finishes but didn't break well and finished ninth last time out in the Yournotthebossofme race. Much as she's improved this year, after the last race it's tough to be sold on her as the favourite from the betting standpoint but she should be competitive. The Late Double starts here.

Race 10: 8-6-4
#8 ICONIC SHIFT broke out and bumped a foe at the start, managed to make the lead but was caught late to lose by a neck in his first run of 2017. He could be tough with a better break in his second start of the year. #6 WAGER ON ME finished a close second behind well meant first time starter One Kool Korona last time out. So far at Ajax she has a second and three thirds in four starts. #4 FAST STREAKIN NICK had three runner up finishes to kick off his Ajax campaign. Last time out he had to settle for third behind Gogo Jangles, who returned to win again last week. He should be a factor.

Good luck and thank you to everyone joining us today!

Ajax Downs Selections July 23

Racing returns at Ajax today with a seven race card. Today's card is highlighted by a trio of trials for the Ontario Sires Stakes Futurity. 21 juveniles have been entered and it's a difficult set of races as only one of those 21 starters have a race under their belt. Here are my selections for today's card.

Race 1: 1-4-2
Welcome to Ajax Downs! #1 NIGHT FISHN, a half sister to Stakes winner Ice Fishn, was checked early in her debut, a QROOI Overnight Series race for Ontario Sired maidens and was unable to recover. She ran a good figure in spite of it. She could improve second time out. #4 MR POLAR EXPRESS was outclassed in the OSS Maturity trials a few weeks back. He did qualify for the AQHA Challenge Maiden and has run a few decent races. #2 GEORGIES MAY KITTY exits a second place finish. She finished fourth in the Overnight series race and seems to be gradually improving. The Daily Double starts here.

Race 2: 2-4-1
This race begins the early Pick 3. #2 PASSUM LANE broke well and led throughout despite lugging in a bit and was under little to no urging late. If he gets out on top again he will do what he can to hold on. #4 ARCTIC LAKE finished fourth in his 2017 debut at this level. He was a winner second off the layoff last year and could repeat that. #1 RICH AND ON FIRE bumped a foe fairly soundly at the start last time out and finished an even fourth, beating two foes that were out of it the second the gate opened. His best effort can win this race but it's a case of whether or not he's at his best.

Race 3: 2-7-3
This is the first trial for the Ontario Sires Stakes Futurity! #2 A RECKLESS AFFAIR is by Fire Finder out of Reckless Wish, a mare who won her two year old debut and was Stakes placed as a juvenile. She posted a fairly quick gate work on June 21. #7 JESS TUFF had a quick gate work on June 28. His dam was a two year old winner who qualified to two futurities and finished second in the Alex Picov Memorial. #3 ELENORR is a full sister to Albertt, who despite being a bit of a slow developer ran very credibly in his two year old debut. She may be better than her workout times suggest.

Race 4: 1-2-6
This is the second trial for the Ontario Sires Stakes Futurity, as well as the start of the $.20 Pick 4! #1 HANOVER HILL STOLI is out of Ima Running Stoli, who was a two time winner as a two year old who qualified to the Grade 2 Mile High Futurity in Colorado. He has been working well. #2 JUNOIMZOOMIN is out of Jessshazoom, a decent two year old runner who raced until she was seven. She shows two quick gate works. #6 SMOAKN GUN showed improvement in his most recent workout. His dam, Jamies Gotta Gun, ran some decent races as a juvenile and won the Ajax Downs Maiden Stakes in 2013.

Race 5: 5-3-6
This is the third and final trial for the Ontario Sires Stakes Futurity! #5 ROYAL HATRICK is by Fire Finder out of Special Royal Takeon. Special Royal Takeon has produced two very nice runners in Now Is Forever and Embrace Extravagence. She has been working well and may be tough. #3 TOO MUCH WHITE exchanged a few bumps and raced a little greenly on debut. He has the advantage of race day experience. #6 HELLFIRES MISTRESS has gradually improved in her workouts. Her dam was a two year old winner who had a solid juvenile season. The late Pick 3 begins here.

Race 6: 7-5-4
This race offers Late Double wagering. #7 TRES FORTUNE bumped a foe at the start but ran a very credible third behind Fishn For a Corona, a horse who had already won a NW2, and One Dashin Rose, who ran a good third in the AQHA Challenge Maiden. He seems like a very honest trier. #5 GOGO JANGLES finished fourth in the AQHA Challenge Maiden. He came back with a good looking win. The race shows no time but I came up with a hand time that works out to a 90 speed index. He could double up here. #4 GRABIN AWARDS has only one win in 15 starts, but has hit the top three on nine occasions. He was in a very competitive field last time out and could grab a piece of it here.

Race 7: 7-2-6
#7 FISHN FOR A CORONA broke her maiden facing NW2 and came right back to beat NW2 again. She takes the next step and could very realistically keep her undefeated streak going. #2 A GAME DASHER scored a speed index win two back before running a very good second behind Rouge River Cartel, who is having a very good season. She has only missed the board once in her eight race career. #6 SITUATION CRITICAL took 2016 off but came back this year and has been close in each of her three starts so far. She's a hard trier and it wouldn't be surprising to see her find the winner's circle here.

Thank you and good luck to everyone joining us today!

Arrogate Wins Del Mar Match Race

Juddmonte Farms' Arrogate, the richest Thoroughbred in North American racing, was an easy winner in his match race over Wachtel Stable and Gary Barber's El Huerfano at Del Mar in San Diego on Saturday.

Winning the 1 1/16th mile contest in dominate fashion, Arrogate was 19 3/4 lengths in front of his competitor at the wire, extending his win streak to eight wins, including the 2016 Breeders' Cup Classic and 2017 Pegasus World Cup and Dubai World Cup. The four year old grey colt earned $18,000 for the win, increasing his record career earnings to $17,102,600.

It is worth noting that the race was run simultaneously with the Grade II San Diego Handicap, which was contested between Accelerate, Donworth and Cat Burglar.

Ajax Downs Selections July 16

Seven races this week at Ajax Downs and we have some good ones. A pair of QROOI Overnight Series dashes for maidens go in Races 3 and 4. The late double consists of the $62,950 Ontario Sires Stakes Derby and the $59,740 Ontario Sires Stakes Maturity. Here are my selections for today's card.

Race 1: 5-4-1
Welcome to Ajax Downs! #5 SHAKE SOME SUGAR was in a bit tight and was herded by another foe before being eased up on Canada Day. He returns quickly so I'm not worried about that effort and he raced huge to nearly beat No Cerveza For You on May 28th. #4 FLY FAST FOR KAYLEE was a winner on May 14 and finished a very credible fourth on June 11. He should always be considered a serious factor when he's in the Speed Index ranks. #1 WINNER ON A LARK was fractious in the gate and raced a bit greenly last time out. Also hurting her was a track that looked to be sloppiest on the inside, where she raced from that day. She's a capable mare who hasn't gotten much her way this year. The Daily Double starts here.

Race 2: 1-5-4
This race kicks off the early Pick 3. #1 FIRST ELEMENT exits a fifth place finish in a QROOI Distance Series race behind some very tough horses. He gets in easier here and probably needed the two starts he's made this year. #5 CHANNELISLANDSFLYER has been second or third in each of his four starts this year. He has been beaten by a couple of today's foes in these starts but could turn the tables on them. #4 LOOKIN TO BE ICONIC beat a decent field in a Speed Index race on June 4, then finished second behind the red-hot Arctic Fame last time out. If she gets out well she should be a factor.

Race 3: 1-4-6
This is a QROOI Overnight Series race for maidens. #1 FEARLESSLEE qualified to the AQHA Challenge Maiden but finished sixth. He has not broken sharply in his two starts at Ajax but has put in some big efforts in the States and should be tough if he breaks well. #4 ONE KOOL KORONA has shown significant improvement in her workouts this year from last year and makes her debut here. She is by multiple Grade 1 winning sire Carters Cartel and out of multiple Stakes winning dam One Kool Bud, who has produced champion One Kool Wave and Stakes winner Bye Me One Kool Bud. This may be a nice one. #6 STOLE MY VINO exits a third place finish behind a pair of Joe Tavares' Louisiana imports. I think she's an improved filly as a three year old but this looks like a tough spot.

Race 4: 5-2-9
This is a QROOI Overnight Series race for maidens, as well as the start of the $.20 Pick 4! #5 ICONIC SHIFT showed improvement as he gained experience last year. He has been working well this year prepping for his return to the races including a bullet work on July 5. He's a longshot to consider. #2 NORSE BAY took a left-hand turn at the start and kept going that direction, finishing second behind well-meant first timer Yournotthebossofme before being DQd. She has put in some good efforts and will hopefully keep a straight path this time. #9 BOLINGA debuted on June 25 with a close fourth place finish. She could improve with experience and has a bit of pedigree to her.

Race 5: 8-3-9
#8 MS FIRST PRIZE PEARL drew outside in her Ajax debut and took a sharp right hand turn at the start, costing her early ground. She finished up pretty well and could improve in her second start over the surface. Starting between horses should help her break straight. #3 MARYLAND MAGIC won his trial for the AQHA Challenge Maiden before finishing a good second in the final. It's tough to argue with his form since coming to Ajax. #9 HELLO STOLI drew outside and prevailed for the win last time out. He draws outside again and could repeat. The late Pick 3 begins here.

Race 6: 9-2-4
This race is the $62,950 Ontario Sires Stakes Derby! #9 GHOST PINES was a very impressive winner on opening day, but broke poorly and didn't seem to like the sloppy track when finishing second on June 4. I think she's a pretty nice filly, you just have to hope she breaks well. #2 HOME TO VEGAS was undefeated until he lost the rider after taking a bump at the start in the Alex Picov Memorial Futurity, but rebounded with an allowance win. He makes his first start of the year here and should be considered the one to beat. #4 LATER TATER was a close second last time out but was DQd for lugging out and bothering a foe. He was a close third behind Home to Vegas in last year's OSS Futurity. Late Double wagering is offered here.

Race 7: 8-3-6
Today's finale is the $59,740 Ontario Sires Stakes Maturity! #8 ALAKAZAAM was bounced in the early yards of his Picov Maturity trials and didn't recover, then dropped the rider at the start in his second start of the season. He finally got out clean in the trials for this race and was a very good second. If he's at his best he can win this race. #3 ALBERTT has gone from looking like a nice Speed Index horse to being the fastest qualifier for today's event. He beat Alakazaam in the trials and if he gets out good he could very well do it again. He's a real nice gelding who tries every time and wants to win. A serious candidate. #6 ICE FISHN took a bit of a stumble at the start but still finished up well and was third behind Albertt and Alakazaam in the trials. She won the OSS Futurity as a two year old and is worth some consideration in this spot.

Good luck and thank you to everyone joining us today!

Ajax Downs Selections July 9

Juvenile season kicks into gear this week at Ajax. We have our first Stakes event for two year olds today, the John Deere Juvenile Challenge, as well as a maiden event for the babies. We may be seeing some future stars today. Eight races on deck today, here are my selections.

Race 1: 7-2-5
Welcome to Ajax Downs! #7 SENATOR WOOT had trouble in her debut at Remington. She ran in the John Deere trials where she finished an okay fourth behind some decent horses. She may continue to move forward. #2 AJ CHICK IN 15 was claimed for $10,000 out of his most recent start, a second place finish at Remington. She worked well enough over the local surface on June 28. #5 WAVE REBEL is out of Seditious, a multiple Stakes winning dam. He worked 250 yards from the gate in 13.90 on May 24. The Daily Double starts here.

Race 2: 1-7-2
This race starts the early Pick 3. #1 ITZ ALL GOOD has made four starts this year and has faced some very tough foes including Albertt and Arctic Fame. He drops out of Starter Allowance company and should be a factor here. #7 CHUGGINGTON was narrowly beaten going 110 yards on May 14 but was a bit even in his most recent out two weeks ago. The group he faced last time looked tougher than this one. #2 SHESASTREAKINCHICK is winless since June 2015 but has been a fringe player at this level more recently. She could round things out.

Race 3: 1-7-4
#1 SWINGIN BEAR won his Ajax debut at 110 yards, ran a good enough fourth facing NW3 on May 28, but was outclassed and finished sixth at 110 again in the QROOI Sprint Series race. He gets back into a NW3 and would be worth a play at 10-1. #7 SITUATION CRITICAL came back after a layoff from the fall of 2015 and has run two big races, right there at the wire both times. She beat Swingin Bear and Cr Party With Corona last time, two of the foes she faces today. #4 ROUGE RIVER CARTEL was a convincing NW2 winner two back, then ran a good third behind Im Speedy and Kona Korona in a NW3. His form is good and there are good references out of all of his recent starts.

Race 4: 3-7-1
This race begins the $.20 Pick 4! #3 PYC TRICKIE LADY makes her first start of the year here, showing a quick gate move on June 21. She ran quite a few good races against respectable foes last year and may be ready to fire first off the bench. #7 FAST STREAKIN NICK has three local starts and three runner up finishes. This will be the first time he's drawn outside at Ajax which may help him. #1 GOGO JANGLES qualified to the AQHA Challenge Maiden and finished fourth by less than a length in the final. He gets in a bit easier here.

Race 5: 5-2-6
#5 GRABIN AWARDS ran a good third in the slop two weeks back in a race that produced next out winner Passum Lane. He gets off the rail for his second start off the bench and had an easy breeze this week. #2 ITTAKESTWOTOOTANGO had a win and two seconds in his first three starts but was roughed up in his final start of 2016. He worked from the gate back in April but did not post another work until this week past, going 220 yards in 12.40 from the pole. #6 EYESA WILD BOY has run well in his recent starts, with two thirds and second in some decent enough races lately. Although very win shy, just one for 18 in his career, he is one of several win candidates in this spot.

Race 6: 10-5-8
Today's feature is the $26,550 John Deere Juvenile Challenge! #10 ZOOMN BLUE is a full brother to the very classy Eyesa Zoomn. He drifted a bit and finished third on debut in the trials over a sloppy surface. He draws outside which could be an asset in this big field. #5 HAD TO BE IVORY was bumped at the start and got the better of Dianne Dynamite, a foe who already had race experience at Indiana, to win his trial. He draws in the middle and could be tough with a clean run. #8 SILKY SENATOR had two third place finishes in Oklahoma before finishing second in her trial. I'm thinking she may not have been as good over the slop as she would be over a fast track and that may be the difference maker for her today. The late Pick 3 starts here.

Race 7: 3-7-6
This Late Double starts here. #3 DEAL A FORTUNE finished third behind Country Boy 123 and Seis Zoom in the Picov Maturity trials then finished fifth in the final. Although he only went one for 10 last year he ran a lot of good race and is he gets out well here he has a shot. #7 SEIS ZOOM looks like the one beat. Second behind Country Boy 123 in her first start of the year and a good fourth in the Maturity final. She has held her own against solid competition before and has beat several of today's rivals. #6 VALIANT STOLI TIME also comes out of the Picov Maturity. He was a good fourth behind One Famous Glass, Fast Man Vic and Fiesty Icon in the trials before finishing seventh in the final. He is a capable horse and you may get a better price on him than my top two.

Race 8: 9-4-2
#9 EYESA DEXTER finished third behind a very impressive first timer, Yournotthebossofme in the QROOI Overnight Series Ontario Sired Maiden. He really seems to be on the improve in his recent starts. #4 GEORGIES MAY KITTY exits the same race where she finished fourth after a slow start. With a faster break she may be able to get the job done. #2 BEWITCHIN didn't show much in her debut as a two year old. She had a troubled trip in her only start this year on June 4. I don't know how much talent she has, but she hasn't gotten a chance to really show anything yet and she should be a longshot.

Good luck and thank you to everyone joining us today!

Ajax Downs Canada Day Selections

Happy Canada Day! Canada turns 150 years old today and the sport of horse racing has been around for 250 years on the day. We are celebrating at Ajax Downs today with a seven race card highlighted by a pair of trials to the Ontario Sires Stakes Maturity. Celebrate our great country with some Canadian racing! Here are my selections for today's card.

Race 1: 6-2-4
Welcome to Ajax Downs! #6 SCOUTING FOR ME has hit the board in each of his three starts this year, most recently second behind the very impressive Later Tater. Although still a maiden with 15 starts he looks tough here. #2 WINNERS PROSPECT has faced some tough U.S. imports in his recent starts. He drops back in to face Ontario Bred company where he has had most of his closer finishes. #4 BAC IN FIRST was a decent fifth last time out. She will use a flipping halter today, something she has used in the past but did not in her most recent start. The Daily Double starts here.

Race 2: 2-3-6
The early Pick 3 begins here. #2 LS PRINCE was eliminated at the start in a tough race on May 7 and was then deemed a non-starter after not receiving a fair start on June 4. With a clean break he could handle this group. #3 DEES BLACK DIMPLES was an okay fifth in her first start of the season. Her form in 2016 was better earlier in the year so she may be live now. #6 KINDA LIKEA LOVESONG was second behind Passum Lane last week. She was in a little tight early. She can be bad in the gate but should be competitive with a clean start.

Race 3: 7-6-3
#7 ANGELLES BABY TNT had a third in a QROOI Overnight series race for mares to kick off 2017 but had a rough trip last time out in the Distance series race. She takes a class drop here. #6 PANTHER HERO was a Stakes winning two year old and Stakes placed as a three year old. He managed to qualify for the Picov Maturity but finished last after breaking poorly. This is a much softer spot but he needs to break better. #3 SHAKE SOME SUGAR was narrowly beaten by No Cerveza For You last time out on May 28. A repeat of that effort makes her competitive once again.

Race 4: 3-6-1
This is the first of two trials to the Ontario Sires Stakes Maturity. It also kicks off the $.20 Pick 4. #3 FIESTY ICON was third behind One Famous Glass and Fast Man Vic in the Picov Maturity trials. Those two ended up being third and second respectively behind Country Boy 123 in the final. He is the defending OSS Maturity champion. #6 ALBERTT was a Speed Index race winner on May 7 and makes his return here. He was unlucky in his only try in a Stakes trial last year so we don't know how he fits but he is game. #1 HOPE RAMBLES ON was a winner on May 21 but did not get away well in a tough 110 yard race two weeks ago. She was a four time winner in nine starts last year and has won from the rail before.

Race 5: 6-10-5
This is the second of two trials to the Ontario Sires Stakes Maturity. #6 SPEEDOCRACY was a good third behind Denali Teller Off and Countrys Comin Bac in his first start of the year. He has been Stakes placed three times and is worth a look here. #10 DINAHLICIOUS was a good fourth in the OSS Maturity last year behind Fiesty Icon, Jesskissmytexas and Im Aquicktrick. Only Fiesty Icon is in this year's trials. She was a very good second behind Pegasos One Underpar on June 11 and makes her second start of the year here. #5 EYESA SPEEDY SIMON exits the same race as Speedocracy but was squeezed at the start and trailed the field. He qualified to this race last year and leads this field in earnings with over $96,000 in the bank. Late Pick 3 wagering is offered here.

Race 6: 9-5-3
The Late Double starts here. #9 ITSALLABOUTRAMBLIN was second to No Cerveza For You in the slop on June 18. He was game in some tough races last year and could be worth a look at a bit of a price. #5 DAYTONA 500 won her NW2 on October 10 but has caught some tough fields and hasn't had great starts in two tries this year. She gets back into her condition and is another option who may offer value. #3 HOME ICE finished second to Zoxtobeyou in his only start of the year so far. He was second in last year's Ontario Sires Stakes Futurity and although he is only a non-winner of two he could be a factor here.

Race 7: 8-5-1
#8 FISHIN FOR A CORONA was a winner facing non-winners of two in her first career start. She gets to run in the same condition again but this group is tougher than the last. We'll see what she can do. #5 ONE DASHING ROSE was an easy trial winner on June 4 before finishing a close third in the AQHA Challenge Maiden last time out. She moves from the rail to a gate that should be loaded late under normal circumstances. #1 MRS FIRST LADY broke her maiden in the AQHA Challenge Maiden last time out. She has a live chance to double up today.

Good luck and happy Canada Day!

Ajax Downs Selections June 25

We are back again at Ajax Downs with an eight race card this week. The feature is the finale, a $20,000 QROOI Overnight Series race for Ontario Sired maidens. Here are my selections for this week's card.

Race 1: 6-3-4
Welcome to Ajax Downs! #6 PASSUM LANE broke slowly and trailed throughout in his 2017 debut last week. He had a good season last year and catches a reasonable field; he just needs to break well. #3 RICH AND ON FIRE was beaten less than a length in his seasonal debut but broke poorly last time out. Last year his speed indexes were consistently in the 80s and he does look like the one to beat. #4 MISS HER MADLY was a troubled sixth last time out. She did have a second place finish to The Dominyunator last year and she may improve as she gains more experience. The Daily Double starts here.

Race 2: 4-1-6
This race kicks off the early Pick 3. #4 COLE MINER has been in contention in each of his three starts this year, with a close fourth and two thirds. He has beat a lot of these horses in the past and could get the job done today. #1 CHANNELISLANDSFLYER has been right there in each of his three starts this year. He had some very good runs along the rail last year including a win and a second behind Storytime Blue. He should be competitive once again. #6 ARCTIC FAME is three for three this year. He was a winner at 110 yards over champion One Kool Wave last week and makes a quick return here.

Race 3: 5-8-2
#5 CHUGGINTON kicked off the season with a close second behind U.S. invader Swingin Bear. He likes 300 yards and hopefully will break well. #8 JIMMY BOYZ CARTEL was a winner in an restricted NW2 in his 2017 debut but got a rough trip two weeks later. He should be much more competitive with a clean run. #2 ROCKIN MISS KITTY did not show much in her debut. She was claimed out of that race and takes a big drop in class here.

Race 4: 4-6-1
This race begins the $0.20 Pick 4! #4 THE FLASH DRIVE raced well against very solid horses in his first two starts as a juvenile. He won his final start of the season easily and has raced well in both of his starts so far this year. #6 EYESA WILD BOY finished second, as he likes to do, behind The Dominyunator last time out. He had a very good run going 350 yards last year where he was second behind Memory Of Jay and probably would have won if not for a stumble at the start. #1 LIME KILN LANE broke his maiden on July 21 and now makes his return. He's lightly raced so the potential to keep improving is still there.

Race 5: 6-3-7
#6 STOLE MY VINO showed a bit of potential to be alright as a two year old. She made her three year old debut in the AQHA Challenge Maiden trials but did not show much. She may improve second off the layoff. #3 KOOL DASHIN BABE had a couple of okay runs in Louisiana last year. She finished an okay fifth in her Ajax debut three weeks ago and may be better now that she has experience over the track. #7 HELLO STOLI broke slowly in his Ajax debut on May 28 and finished last but was beaten only a length for everything. He's another with potential to improve a bit.

Race 6: 4-6-5
#4 KONA CORONA showed some talent in his first two starts but broke poorly in the Alex Picov Memorial Futurity to end the season. He came back and edged out Rouge River Cartel for a win on May 28th and is one of several to consider here. #6 FAST BUCK raced well consistently last year, with runs against Stakes horses like Country Boy 123 in his lines. He was a non factor in the Picov Maturity last week behind Country Boy 123. He should be far more competitive here. #5 JESS KISS MY DASH is a full brother to Jesskissmytexas. He's a horse who seems to attract bad luck more often than you'd like but isn't un-talented by any means. He has had two sharp gate workouts prepping for his 2017 debut. The late Pick 3 begins here.

Race 7: 6-2-5
The Late Double starts here. #6 FURR SHEAR made his debut on June 4 with a sharp second behind American import Miss Dock Hill, who came back to be third against NW2 last week. He could be tough second time out. #2 FAST STREAKIN NICK has been second by a neck in both of his local starts, both against respectable foes. He seems to like it here. #5 GRABIN COURAGE was third on debut behind Hickerson, who later finished second in the Alex Picov Memorial Futurity. He returned on May 28 for his season debut with a second place finish behind Agustoarnot where he veered inwards sharply. This group looks a bit tougher than his previous start.

Race 8: 8-1-9
Today's feature is a $22,000 QROOI Overnight series race for Ontario Sired maidens. #8 YOURNOTTHEBOSSOFME has worked three times from the gate since May and makes his debut here. He is out of Go Smashing Baby, a champion mare who raced here from 2003 to 2007, won several Stakes races and 27 of 39 starts. Hopefully this gelding has some of that talent. #1 DASHING OUT OF VEGAS, a full brother to Home to Vegas, showed nothing to get excited about last year. He did show improvement in his 2017 debut, finishing second in a speed index race, and now gets to take a shot here. #9 ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOMIN BY comes off of a pair of runner up finishes, most recently between Flirt With the Boyz and Two Kool To Wave, both who I think are respectable horses. She seems much better now than she was last year.

Good luck and thank you to everyone joining us today!

Ajax Downs Selections June 18

It's Sunday which means it's race day at Ajax Downs and do we ever have a stacked card today. 10 races on tap today, with two trials to the John Deere Juvenile Challenge, the first legs of the QROOI Sprint and Distance series races going 110 and 350 yards respectively, the AQHA Challenge Maiden final and the $58,000 Picov Maturity featuring a terrific group of older horses. There are sure to be many exciting races today, definitely worth tuning in for. Here are my selections for today's card.

Race 1: 5-4-1
Welcome to Ajax Downs! #5 PASSUM LANE wrapped up 2016 with a very good second in a Speed Index race. He was in the top three in seven of 10 starts last year and should fit with this group. #4 IAMASWEETMAN was beaten a head by Jimmy Boyz Cartel on May 14, a solid seasonal bow. Although only one for 30 in his career he is capable of grabbing cheques. #1 GRABIN AWARDS faced good fields in his final two starts of 2016, both third place finishes. He has worked well preparing for this season. The Daily Double starts here.

Race 2: 4-5-6
This is the first trial to the John Deere Regional Juvenile Challenge. #4 LETHAL PYC is a son of Pyc Paint Your Wagon out of Lethal Pyc, a restricted Grade 1 winner and multiple open Grade 1 placed earner of over $450,000 US. He has improved in his workouts. #5 DIANE DYNAMITE raced well on debut at Indiana. She is a sister to several decent horses including Grade 3 placed Aberdonian. #6 CARENEROS leads the field in experience, racing three times already at Remington, showing some promise before being claimed for $25,000. The experience edge may make him the one to beat.

Race 3: 4-2-5
This is the second trial to the John Deere Regional Juvenile Challenge. #4 ZOOMN BLUE is a full brother to the ultra consistent Eyesa Zoomn. He has had a few gate works preparing for his debut. #2 ISLAND VODKA was beaten less than a length in her debut at Remington where she was bumped at the start. She could be tough with a clean start. #5 SILKY SENATOR has made two starts at Remington, both good third place efforts. She broke very well in her most recent start and is another who looks very threatening today. Pick 3 wagering is offered here.

Race 4: 1-6-4
This race kicks off the $.20 Pick 4! #1 WINNER ON A LARK caught a tough field and got a rough trip in her seasonal debut three weeks back. She gets in easier here and tends to race well from the rail. #6 NO CERVEZA FOR YOU dropped into a Speed Index race and beat a field that included Cole Miner. She runs far more good races than bad and had a three win streak last year. #4 IM PRETTY FAMES has raced in two starter allowance races this year and run a second and a decent fourth. Despite not winning a race last year she is a trier and is a win candidate here.

Race 5: 3-7-10
This race is a QROOI Sprint Series race going 110 yards. #3 BEACH BUM EDDIE is multiple stakes placed in Indiana. He is a very sharp breaker with a lot of class so the opportunity to try 110 yards makes perfect sense for him. #7 ONE KOOL WAVE has four wins in six tries at 110 yards. His lifetime record of 21 wins in 35 starts speaks for itself: he's really talented. We'll see how he does in his 9 year old debut. #10 CARTELS FAST MONEY won a QROOI Overnight series race for mares last month. She is a great breaker who has done well at 110 yards and will hopefully break well from the outside.

Race 6: 6-8-7
This race is a QROOI Distance Series race going 350 yards. #6 HICKERSON was the runner up in the Alex Picov Memorial Futurity last year. He is a large, leggy horse who will appreciate longer distances from 350 and up. #8 ALAKAZAAM lost all hope at the start when trying to qualify to the Picov Maturity. He had an impressive win streak last year that included the Ontario Sires Stakes Derby. If he gets out well he should be tough. #7 ANGELLES BABY TNT overcame a slow start to be third in the QROOI Overnight race for mares last month. She has done well against respectable foes in Alberta earlier in her career. Pick 3 wagering is offered here.

Race 7: 4-6-1
This race is the $29,667 AQHA Challenge Maiden! It also starts the $.20 Late Pick 4. #4 FEARLESSLEE raced against some very classy horses as a juvenile in the U.S. In his Ajax debut he hopped at the start and cost himself some early ground. Hopefully he breaks more alertly. #6 MARYLAND MAGIC had run several good races down south last year and this spring, then scored a rather easy win in the trials for this race. He has a very real chance to double up here. #1 ONE DASHIN ROSE was an easy winner in her trial and set the fastest qualifying time. She has put in good efforts along the rail in previous races down south.

Race 8: 3-4-8
#3 SNOW STORMING made her 2017 debut in a Speed Index race where she was fourth behind No Cerveza For You and Cole Miner. She gets back into her condition now and could be better second off the layoff. #4 MISS DOCK HILL broke well and broke her maiden in her Ajax debut on June 4. She had put in a few very good runs in the U.S. before coming here. #8 EC FIRE FLY broke her maiden in her Ajax debut over another American import named Fast Streakin Nick. She may continue to move forward.

Race 9: 8-1-7
Today's feature race is the $58,000 Picov Maturity! #8 ONE FAMOUS GLASS dug in with conviction to win his trial, his 15th career win. He wrapped up 2016 with a win in the Alex Picov Memorial Championship and must always be respected. #1 COUNTRY BOY 123 won his trial with complete authority, albeit in a race where his most dangerous competition, Alakazaam, was finished at the start. He was very game at Los Alamitos for the Adequen Derby Challenge Championship last fall and was deserving of the QROOI 2016 Horse of the Year honour he received. #7 FAST MAN VIC had a terrific run at Hialeah before coming to Ajax last year. His Ajax season didn't quite pan out as well as I thought it would, although he did score two wins here. He was very game in defeat behind One Famous Glass in the trials, and if he can find that old Hialeah form he could pull an upset here. The Late Double begins here.

Race 10: 7-3-2
#7 UAINTSEENNOTHINGYET showed nothing on debut, but wasn't too bad in his second start, finishing fourth of five behind Winner On a Lark and Hammer Tyme after a troubled trip. With a clean run down the outside he may be able to upset. #3 NORSE BAY finished fourth behind Ghost Pines and Flirt With the Boyz on opening day, then second behind repeat winner Perfect to Look At on May 21. In her most recent start she was sandwiched at the start and finished last. She is probably the one to beat. #2 STREAKIN JET SPEED has been no better than fifth in her five starts, but has had trouble in a few and has caught tough foes in others. This is the softest looking race she has been in.

Good luck and thank you to everyone joining us today!

Ajax Downs Selections June 11

Eight races this week at Ajax Downs. No stakes, trials or overnight series events and I'm in a rush so here are my selections for today's card.

Race 1: 3-1-5
Welcome to Ajax Downs! #3 CHANNELISLANDSFLYER did not break perfect last time but finished well to be third. His first start of the year was a narrow second in an optional claiming field where he outran The Fdd Map. He stretches out from 250 to 330 yards today. #1 MS DASHIN CORONA finished second behind Arctic Fame, a head in front of Channelislandsflyer last time out. She picks up a lot of second and third place cheques and draws the rail here. #5 COLE MINER was fourth by a half length in the optional claiming race that Channelislandsflyer finished second in, then finished third in a Speed Index race behind No Cerveza For You two weeks back. He fits just fine with this group. The Daily Double starts here.

Race 2: 2-4-1
This race begins the early Pick 3. #2 SAMMIES ROCKET made his 2017 debut two weeks ago in a similar race where he finished fourth of six after breaking slowly. He had some good efforts last year and doesn't have to beat much today. #4 DASHING SUGARMAN wrapped up last year with a very close second after a string of non-threatening efforts. On the right day he is capable and he certainly has the ability to win this race but it is impossible to tell when he'll thrown in a good effort. #1 GEORGIES MAY KITTY is a maiden who has had some okay races against other non-winners. She could get a piece of the action today.

Race 3: 2-3-6
#2 IFWISHESWEREFISHES kicked off the season with a good second behind Miromar, a new U.S. import who already had a win at the meet. She was in good form at the end of 2016 and looks tough here. #3 SITUATION CRITICAL finished a neck behind Ifwisheswerefishes in the Miromar race two weeks ago. She missed the 2016 season but was running very well in 2015 against respectable horses. #6 PURRFECT STORM finished fourth by a half length in his seasonal debut four weeks ago. He had the rail post on that day but may be better from the outside gate he draws this time out.

Race 4: 1-5-6
This race kicks off the $.20 Pick 4! #1 PEGASOS ONE UNDERPAR is an 11 time winner with nearly $150,000 in earnings. He did not score any wins last year but did have two seconds at the end of the season, one behind Fiesty Icon and the other a very narrow defeat to Eyesa Zoomn. He's a classy old horse who should be right there. #5 SUGARMANS DELIGHT stumbled at the start going 110 yards to kick off the year. He exits a fourth place finish behind Denali Teller Off, Countrys Comin Bac and Speedocracy two weeks ago. Last year he was beaten a nose by Alakazaam in the Ontario Sires Stakes Derby. #6 FLY N ROCK is a NW3 who has been doing well in claiming races down south. He seems to do his best running at longer distances, he's a winner at 550 yards, but the bigger question is how will he stand up facing our higher level horses. He is worth consideration as a longshot.

Race 5: 4-5-2
#4 THE DOMINYUNATOR was an easy winner in his final start of 2016. In his most recent start he was third behind Kona Corona and Rouge River Cartel, who returned to win last week. He looks very competitive. #5 EYESA WILD BOY exits a well beaten third in a race where basically nobody but the eventual winner broke great leaving that horse with an easy lead and a near two-length win. It could have been a very different race with a different break. Although only one for 16 in his career he is a very hard trier who runs very well more times than not. #2 AGUSTOARNOT caught the right field and really seemed to wake up last time, breaking his maiden by a length. There are some tougher horses here but some horses begin to improve after they figure out how to win.

Race 6: 3-8-4
#3 A GAME DASHER finished third behind Zoxtobeyou and Home Ice after being bumped at the start two weeks ago. That's a tough couple of horses and she finds herself eligible for this Speed Index race where things should be a bit less difficult. #8 FLY FAST FOR KAYLEE won his seasonal debut at this level on May 14. He is a solid hard knocker between the Speed Index and Starter Allowance ranks who always warrants a look. #4 YAWLPLAYINGWITHFIRE was a qualifier to the Ontario Sires Stakes Futurity last year. He scored a maiden win against Ontario Sired company on May 14 and has a shot to round things out here. The late Pick 3 starts here.

Race 7: 4-3-6
The Late Double starts here. #4 TRES FORTUNE drew the rail and gravitated towards it two weeks back, finishing fourth by a half length. In his Ajax debut last year he was third behind Home to Vegas and Zoxtobeyou before being placed second. He could tough if he keeps a straight path today. #3 FAST STREAKIN NICK had some good efforts in Louisiana last year and ran well in his Ajax debut, finishing second by a neck and outfinishing a few rivals who return here, including Tres Fortune. He may be the one to beat in his second start over the surface. #6 PEVES STREAKIN CLASSY has been racing in maiden claiming races in Oklahoma and has been beaten a half length in each of her last three outings. She should be able to be competitive.

Race 8: 9-4-3
#9 FLIRT WITH THE BOYZ finished second behind Ghost Pines on opening day. She was a qualifier to the Alex Picov Memorial Futurity last year, and that Futurity was the only race where she wasn't second or third. #4 TWO KOOL TO WAVE has been no worse than fourth in four starts so far in his career. He has had some issues at the gate but has done well in spite of them and certainly has potential to be a nice horse. #3 JESS RIP debuts here with three gate workouts on her form. She is out of Rippin Dash, a mare won won her career debut at Mt. Pleasant Meadows. She may be big on debut.

Good luck and thank you to everyone joining us this week!

Ajax Downs Selections June 4

Back in action today at Ajax Downs. A cancellation two weeks back delayed this, but we finally get to run our first trials of the season, two for the AQHA Maiden Challenge and two for the Picov Maturity. It is sure to be a great card. Here are my selections.

Race 1: 5-3-6
Welcome to Ajax Downs! #5 GHOST PINES overcame a troubled start and surged through a tight spot to win on opening day. Her lone start last year was a very good second behind One Special Domino. She was quite impressive in winning last time and looks tough today. #3 PERFECT TO LOOK AT faced good fields in each of his four starts last year, then dropped into Ontario Sired company for his 2017 debut and was an easy winner. He faces a much tougher group here compared to who he won against. #6 EYESA WILD BOY was a non factor in his 2017 debut, but his 2016 debut was not very hot either and he quickly found his form. He is very consistent at grabbing cheques with 11 top three finishes in 15 career starts. The Daily Double and a Pick 3 start here.

Race 2: 2-4-1
This is the first of two trials to the AQHA Challenge Maiden. #2 CORONAS CHROME was beaten a neck on debut at Remington. In his third start he was fourth in a Speedhorse Futurity trial behind a horse named Dreamers Liaison, who later won a trial to the Miss Roxie Little Futurity at Indiana and was fourth by half a length in that final. He has had two local gate works in preparation for these trials. #4 ONE DASHIN ROSE barely broke and was outrun in her final start at Will Rogers. She had decent form prior at Remington and Indiana, including a field-best 66 speed figure on September 13. She looks competitive, assuming she breaks with the field. #1 TWO KOOL TO WAVE was an impressive fourth after a bad break in his debut, then continued to run well despite not being able to get the win. I do expect him to win something this year, and if the US invaders prove to be overrated in this field he could be very dangerous.

Race 3: 1-2-4
This is the second of two trials to the AQHA Challenge Maiden, as well as the start of the $.20 early Pick 4! #1 FEARLESSLEE debuted with a fourth place finish in the Ruidoso Futurity trials. The winner of that trial, Apolltical Chad, went on to win the Ruidoso Futurity before finishing fourth in the All American Futurity. That trial also contained Sam Houston Futurity winner Just Call Me Carter and eventual stakes-winner Whata Corona, who is five for 10 in his career. His most recent start was a close third for a claiming price at Los Alamitos. He is the class of the race. #2 MARYLAND MAGIC has scored four top-three finishes in seven starts so far in his career. So far in 2017 he has two thirds in three tries at Sunland and Remington, including a run in the slop which should be noted in case of poor weather conditions. He seems like an honest type. #4 FLIRT WITH THE BOYZ put in some good efforts against solid horses as a two year old. She raced on opening day, finishing a very good second behind Ghost Pines, a filly who looks to have a very bright future. Although she catches some tough looking invaders here, she has at least proven she can compete with the high-end locals.

Race 4: 2-1-4
This race begins a Pick 3. #2 LUMMIS FIRST qualified to last year's Alex Picov Memorial Futurity where he finished seventh. He made his three year old debut in a Speed Index race where he finished a neck behind Fly Fast For Kaylee, a consistent old veteran runner. He could move forward second time off the layoff. #1 ROUGE RIVER CARTEL finished third on opening day behind Miromar and Zoxtobeyou, both of which have come back to win their next starts. He returned last week with a very good second behind Kona Corona. He consistently puts in solid efforts. #4 ZING DYNASTY was fourth, just behind Rouge River Cartel on opening day. She broke on top but evened out late. She had the rail post and was making her first start over the track; perhaps she may be better without these circumstances in play today.

Race 5: 5-4-3
This is the first of two trials to the Picov Maturity. #5 FIESTY ICON did not look to be a serious factor in the top older horse division in his first starts last year, but quickly got back on track with wins in the trials and final of the Ontario Sires Stakes Maturity. He then came back to open company for a third place finish in the All Canadian Classic, then a very narrow runner up finish in the Alex Picov Memorial Championship. If he is ready off the bench he is a player here. #4 ONE FAMOUS GLASS has been a winner in these trials two years in a row. It's obvious why one would pick him: he practically always runs well. He's a 14 time winner with nearly a quarter-million in the bank. He won the Alex Picov Memorial Championship last year and always runs well off of the layoff. #3 ONE KOOL WAVE made his return to the races with a light campaign of four starts last year, with two wins, a second and a third. He wrapped things up with a win in the QROOI Sprint series final, and was beaten a neck by his powerful stablemate First Down the Track in a previous QROOI Sprint Series race. He is a very capable veteran. A Pick 3 starts here.

Race 6: 1-3-7
This is the second of two trials to the Picov Maturity, as well as the start of the $.20 late Pick 4!. #1 COUNTRY BOY 123 tasted defeat only once in seven local starts last year, scoring two Derby wins along the way. They took their berth to the Adequan Derby Challenge Championship at Los Al and finished a very credible fourth in the $200,000 final behind Jess Good Reason, who went on to win the G1 Charger Bar Handicap and Toughie, a three time Stakes winner in Alberta who qualified to the Ed Burke Million Futurity as a juvenile. With a clean break, it's tough to anticipate a poor run from this gelding. #3 ALAKAZAAM is hardly a slouch either. He scored six wins in eight starts last year, one of the losses being the start where he dropped his rider at the start. He did outrun Country Boy 123 once last year and finished narrowly behind him in the Derby Challenge despite not breaking perfectly. He's a perfectly capable horse. #7 RUNAWAY CAUSE is not a model of consistency but does throw in some very good runs on occasion. In her 2016 debut she was second behind One Kool Wave. She also ran credibly behind Alakazaam and Fast Man Vic last year. She has a lot of run in her, it's just a case of whether or not she'll show it.

Race 7: 1-5-2
#1 FLASHY LIFESTYLE makes her career debut here. She is by very talented runner and successful New Mexico sire First Moonflash out of a Mr Jess Perry mare. She failed to make the races while training in New Mexico last year, but has improved with a series of gate workouts here. We'll see how she goes at first asking. #5 MISS DOCK HILL was beaten a nose in her final start of 2016, a maiden claimer at Will Rogers. She had a solid juvenile season which included a third in a Heritage Place Futurity trial and warrants consideration here. #2 EH LEADEROFTHEBEACH finished fourth in her lone start at the Oneida County Fairgrounds in Idaho. The winner of that race, Duck Dash N Go ended up winning the Futurity at Oneida and was second in a Stakes race at Los Alamitos. We will see how the Idaho form translates at Ajax. The final Pick 3 on the card starts here.

Race 8: 4-5-8
This race kicks off the Late Double. #4 SELECTIVE MEMORY rode the rail to a win in a tough optional claimer over Channelislandsflyer and The Fdd Map last time out. He finds himself eligible for this Speed Index race and gets in easier than he did last time. #5 SIX SHOOTIN TEX is the model of consistency despite how lightly raced he is, 10 top three finishes in 12 starts. He scored his third career win three weeks back and certainly looks like he can pick up a piece of it today. #8 CRUWSYN THE ARCTIC was run down narrowly by Hope Rambles On two weeks back in a short field. Although 2016 was not a great season for him, the fields he faced last year were all topped by very good horses that would be tough to beat if they were facing this group. Don't write him off.

Race 9: 2-7-8
#2 LATER TATER qualified to the Ontario Sires Stakes Futurity where he finished third by a head behind Home to Vegas and Home Ice. He then raced in the Alex Picov Memorial Futurity trials but lost all hope of getting into the final as he along with several others were wiped out by Zoxtobeyou. He has worked well this spring and should be tough. #7 BEWITCHIN was not a factor in her lone start last year. She worked from the gate in 14.01 which does not set the track on fire, but the track was fairly slow that day and probably would have posted a quicker number on a normal day. She may be better as a three year old. #8 SCOUTING FOR ME was third by a neck behind Ghost Pines on opening day before getting beat a nose a week later. He has 8 top three finishes in 14 starts and looks better than several of his competitors.

Good luck and thank you to everyone joining us today!
